WHAT WE ARE ABOUT
The compass: The original way-finder, that enables anyone to find their way without landmarks or directions. We use the symbol of the compass to sharpen our focus on how we manage our business today ensuring that our actions align with our vision. This includes our values, principles, mission, goals, vision and direction. The goal then, in terms of our management outcomes, is to make sure that what we do contributes directly to what is most important. When operating according to the compass the longer-term business goals we have set ourselves appear as important but not urgent. Things which demand our attention in the moment on the other hand will appear as urgent and if we are not careful, and unless we have a system to separate the two, we can spend valuable time focusing only on the urgent, only to find we have neglected those things which are most important to us and the business.
The compass therefore being exactly that – something to return to, to ensure we are still heading the right direction.
To quote Goethe, “Things that matter most must never be at the mercy of things that matter least.”
The Compass therefore represents to us the direction and key outcomes the business is to achieve and will provide guidance along the way to ensure we remain on path.

PRIMARY DIRECTIONS
NORTH: SOLUTIONS
The primary aim and reason for our existence is to provide our clients with tangible solutions to real challenges. Providing a boom-open-upper, is not a solution. Understanding the reason and importance of access control and what the intended purpose behind it is, allows for the placement of the right skills and attributes, with the right procedures and equipment, to deliver outcomes that address the requirements.
To explain this further, we can use example the idea of Key Control. Key Control is put in place to ensure the integrity of a lock or a door. But the purpose is to ensure that the goods that are locked away, remains secure.
It is our ability to provide our clients with workable solutions that are focused on delivering critical and measurable outcomes, that has set us apart over the years. We have honed our skills to integrate manpower, processes and technology into a seamless service solution that provides efficiency, real time management information, measured outcomes and value for money to our clients.
Over the past 25 years, we have been exposed to almost every client market segment and encountered such a wide range of challenges, that there are very little we have not encountered and for which we were not able to find suitable solutions for.
The systems, processes and teams we have built up over the years are all geared towards delivering meaningful and sustainable security solutions to our clients.

EAST: COLLABORATION
For our people to effectively serve we must surround ourselves with amazing people that has adopted the mindset of “It's not about me”. Our suppliers and service providers share this service mantra.
We cannot be everything to everyone. Therefore, we engage and collaborate with likeminded companies and individuals, who specialize in fields that add to and complement our service offering, providing our clients with a seamless integrated solution that can address a wide range of service requirements. To our clients this translates to peace of mind, quality and care, knowing that what is important to them, is important to us.
SOUTH: BORING IS GOOD - Discipline and Responsibility
Great movies are filled with drama and suspense. The drama may play out on a plane being hijacked, while flying through a storm and full of snakes. Watching the film is exhilarating and provides entertainment, when asked you would like to experience this on your next flight, you would probably state that you would do most anything to ensure that this does not happen to you.
This is mostly why pilots and crews spend so much time on maintenance and pre-flight inspections. Everything is checked, re-checked, then triple checked. Any potential problem must be identified while still safely on the ground, not in the air. And especially when lives are at stake.
We ask clients to put their faith in us and trust us with their businesses, homes, families, and money. When things of importance are at stake you want as little excitement as possible. You want the journey to be uneventful.
The work within our industry is often misunderstood as dealing with emergencies. The actual truth is that when things go wrong, we have already failed. When things go wrong, it is because a process failed, an instruction was not properly executed, a routine patrol or check was not done, or we did not communicate critical information in time.
If you think of it, our primary function and that of our people is not to run around putting out fires. Even though it is easy to succumb to the excitement of the energy and emotional imbalance and the drama of putting out fires and it can feel rewarding to be extremely busy running around, this remains a false excitement and a failure – and wasted energy.
The comfort of emergency is that the message is very clear: there is a fire, and it needs to be extinguished. Even though this may seem to indicate a higher level of performance, it is in fact not - it is simply fixing something that should not have been broken in the first place.
When there is an emergency you execute a drill, you do not have to think. This makes managers lazy. Service managers will sit back and wait to be told by paying clients what the problem is and what they need to do about it – then they can put out the fire. Applying their minds and critically looking at the problem, takes energy and effort.
It is however the best way to approach any project, task, job that has lives and livelihoods at stake and therefore, if we wish to be successful, we need to embrace the preventative operational approach of “boring is good”!
WEST: PREVENTATIVE MANAGEMENT
In short, preventative management is the process through which measures are introduced to prevent incidents from taking place.
This is a mindset throughout our business, where we focus on critical actions and controls that are focused on prevention, rather than reaction. We conduct a thorough security gap analysis, understanding the environment and what client functions are required to be performed. With a clear understanding of this, we assess the physical elements and barriers in place, procedures, technology and manpower requirements, and develop an integrated task process that will effectively close all assessed gaps and mitigate potential risks.
It is in the constant monitoring of these controls against execution that provides insights for improvement. Where an incident occurs, we revert back to the process, identify where the current processes failed and created a gap, then close the gap.
Although arresting people creates a sensation and seems exciting, the truth is that it could have been prevented if the right energy and attention was given to preventing criminal activity at the start.

NORTH EAST: OUR PEOPLE
We have managed to get it right to operate in an industry that achieved a combination of possibly three of the most challenging industries in the world.
Criminal: Our industry resists crime and creates barriers between our clients and criminals.
Labour: Not only is our service primarily delivered by people, it is also delivered to people.
Service: Service is often intangible and difficult to measure, leading to emotional views on good or bad service.
Some people spend their professional lives only operating in one of these industries and have the grey hairs to prove it. We jumped in the deep end and asked for all three at once.
Predominantly however we work with people, and we serve! We serve our internal and external customers. Our clients are our external customers, and our personnel are our internal customers.
I have long been perplexed by what I heard when security companies harmonize presentation gospel lamentations when they state categorically that “our people are our most important asset”. It sounds great until you dig just a little deeper and ask the question, “Ok, well, what do you pay your people then?” The answer following being the harsh reality of “As little as we possibly can, and only because laws force us to comply!”
These two statements, seemingly coming from the same source just does not sit well. Anywhere! With no one!
When we started our business, we departed from this stereotypical ideology, and we simply made the decision to value our people!
Not where we want, but where it makes a difference in their lives - to serve them!
And in answer to the question of payment, well; “As much as we possibly can!”
At Atom we value our people, and we spend most of our time designing security solutions that will benefit our clients, and that will also provide meaningful financial reward and development for our personnel and associated contractors. To all the sceptics, this is not only possible, but we have done so for years.

NORTH WEST: VIRTUAL MANAGEMENT
Technology enables us to empower our staff, but it also allows us to manage remotely. The days of “off-site monitoring” and “patrol systems” are over. Our service philosophy is shaped around outcomes. Actions. We do not remotely monitor your cameras or merely measure patrols that were conducted. We have moved away from the reactive mindset of “we will tell somebody when things go wrong”. We are all about preventing incidents – if we constantly have to put out fires, we have failed.
Our Virtual Management service focuses on routines, checks and compliance confirmations to create a service platform focused on the prevention of incidents. This means that our teams engage and act, rather than monitoring and reporting (or passing the buck for someone else to deal with it). Because we create environments of prevention and compliance, we see incidents as process or system failures which require refocus. We work towards boring. No incidents means no drama and therefore: Boring is Good.
The Virtual Team manages through run sheets, task scheduling via programmed alarm stacks, technology and productivity systems that are driven all day and all year from our control room environments. This requires effective integration between hardware, system software and people and we have perfected methodologies that have revolutionized the security industry from being totally reactive to predominantly preventative. Our operational applications have placed our personnel in the field at arm's length from our Virtual Team to engage with at any time to ensure results.

The service industry is about giving and caring. We foster a culture that it is not about our business, but rather about the client. To drive this point everyone, irrespective of role or level, can say that "It's Not About Me".

To our Controllers, Supervisors, Managers, and Administrators, it is about our officers.
To departments, it is about what they do to support other departments.
Within teams, it is about you buddy.
And to us as owners, it is about our people.
